MIA Update: The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced two burial updates and ten new identifications for service members who have been missing and unaccounted-for from World War II and Korea. Returning home for burial with full military honors are: As of: 10-10-23 

--Army Pvt. 1st Class Charles A. Dickman, 17, of Cashton, Wisconsin, was a member of Mike Company, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He went missing in action on July 12, 1950. The Army issued a presumptive finding of death on Dec. 13, 1953. He will be buried in his hometown on Oct. 21, 2023. Read about Dickman.

--Navy Seaman 2nd Class Stanley C. Galaszewski, 29, of Steubenville, Ohio, was assigned to the battleship USS California, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941, resulting in the death of 104 crewmen including Galaszewski. He will be buried in his hometown on Nov. 3, 2023. Read about Galaszewski.

--Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. Gilbert H. Myers, 27, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was assigned to the 381st Bombardment Squadron, 310th Bombardment Group. He went missing in action on July 10, 1943. He will be buried in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Nov. 10, 2023. Read about Myers.

 --Army Pfc. Roy J. Searle, 22, of Providence, Rhode Island, was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. He was mortally wounded on Dec. 9, 1944. He will be buried on Sept. 13, 2023, in Lake Worth, Florida. Read about Searle.

--Army Air Forces Pfc. Glenn A. Harris, 26, of Monterey, California, was a member of the 93rd Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group. He was captured on April 9, 1942, and died as a prisoner of war on July 26, 1942. He will be buried in Bradley, California, on Sept. 30, 2023. Read about Harris.
 
--Army Air Forces Flight Officer Chester L. Rinke, 33, of Marquette, Michigan, was assigned to the 678th Bombardment Squadron, 444th Bombardment Group, 58th Bombardment Wing, Twentieth Bomber Command. He was killed in action on June 26, 1944. He will be buried in Seville, Ohio, on a date to be determined. Read about Rinke.
 
--Army Sergeant Stanley Turba, 27, of Russellton, Pennsylvania, was a member of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He went missing in action on April 26, 1951. The Army issued a presumptive finding of death on Feb. 23, 1954. He will be buried in Columbus, Ohio, on a date to be determined. Read about Turba.
 
--Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Charles G. Reynolds, 24, of Bridgeport, Ohio, was assigned to the 498th Bombardment Squadron, 345th Bombardment Group. He went missing in action on November 27, 1943. He will be buried in Bridgeport, Ohio, on a date to be determined. Read about Reynolds.
 
--Army Air Forces 1st Lt. George W. Winger, 25, of Columbus, Ohio, was assigned to the 66th Bombardment Squadron, 44th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. He went missing in action on Aug. 1, 1943.  U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sanford I. Finger, 29, of Miami Beach, Florida, killed during the Vietnam War, was accounted for Aug. 23, 2022.

U.S. Army Air Forces Cpl. Merle L. Pickup, 27, of Provo, Utah, killed during World War II, was accounted for July 20, 2022.

U.S. Army Air Forces Tech. Sgt. James M. Triplett, 36, killed during World War II, was accounted for Oct. 25, 2022.

 U.S. Army Air Forces Pvt. John W. Ropp, 31, who was captured and died as a prisoner of war during World War II, was accounted for Oct. 25, 2022

 U.S. Army Sgt. Alfred H. Sidney, 23, of Littleton, New Hampshire who was killed during the Korean War, was accounted for Aug. 23, 2022.

 U.S. Army Air Forces Cpl. Charles W. Eeds, 23, who was captured and died as a prisoner of war during World War II, was accounted for Oct. 25, 2022.

 U.S. Army Pvt. James R. Tash, 20, of St. Louis, Missouri, who was captured and died as a prisoner of war during World War II, was accounted for Sept. 27, 2022.

 U.S. Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. David E. Holeman, 39, of Le Harpe, Kansas, who was captured and died as a prisoner of war during World War II, was accounted for Aug. 23, 2022.

 U.S. Army Reserve Chief Warrant Officer 3 Larry A. Zich, 24, killed during the Vietnam War, was accounted for Oct. 25, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Cpl. Tommie T. Hanks, 27, of Fort Worth, Texas, killed during the Korean War, was accounted for Aug. 2, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Pfc. Francis P. Martin, 25, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, killed during World War II, was accounted for June 21, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Staff Sgt. James Rotunno, 27, of Brooklyn, New York, killed during World War II, was accounted for Sept. 27, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. Walter Nies, 23, of Eureka, South Dakota, killed during World War II, was accounted for Aug. 2, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Pfc. Robert A. Wright, 18, of Whitesville, KY, who was killed during the Korean War, was accounted for Aug. 15, 2022.

U.S. Army Cpl. Joseph H. Gunnoe, 21, of Charleston, West Virginia, killed during World War II, was accounted for Sept. 14, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. Wayne L. Dyer, 22, of Hobart, Oklahoma killed during World War II, was accounted for on Sept. 9, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Sgt. Allen H. Tuttle, 23, of Tacoma, Washington, who died as a prisoner of war during the Korean War, was accounted for Oct. 26, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Air Forces Tech. Sgt. John M. Carroll, 32, of New York, New York, killed during World War II, was accounted for Aug. 23, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. William Scott, 21, killed during World War II, was accounted for Nov. 28, 2022.

 

U.S. Army Pfc. Dale D. Thompson, 18, killed during the Korean War, was accounted for Nov. 28, 2022.

 

U.S. Army Air Forces Pvt. Joseph E. Lescaut, 21, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, who was captured and died as a prisoner of war during World War II, was accounted for Aug. 15, 2022.

 

  U.S. Army Pfc. Arthur L. Pierce, 26, of Malden, Massachusetts who was captured and died as a prisoner of war during World War II, was accounted for July 28, 2022.

 

 

 U.S. Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. Theodore F. Scarborough, 21, of Brooklyn, Mississippi, killed during World War II, was accounted for Sept. 7, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Pfc. William L. Simon, 20, killed during World War II, was accounted for Nov. 29, 2022.

 

U.S. Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. Michael Uhrin, 21, of Metuchen, New Jersey, killed during World War II, was accounted for May 12, 2022.

 

 U.S. Army Air Forces Tech. Sgt. Ralph E. Richardson, Jr., 21, of Columbia, South Carolina, killed during World War II, was accounted for Sept. 14, 2022.

-- Army Pvt. Felix M. Yanez, 19, of Douglas, Arizona, was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was killed in action on July 16, 1950, while fighting the North Korean People’s Army along the Kum River, north of Taejon, South Korea. Following the war, his remains could not be identified. He will be buried in Tucson, Arizona, on Sep. 3, 2022. Read about Yanez.
-- Army Air Forces Sgt. Herald R. Boyd, 25, Granger, Texas, was assigned to 350th Bombardment Squadron, 100th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. On Feb. 3, 1945, the B-17G Flying Fortress bomber on which Boyd was serving as a gunner crashed when it was struck by a ground rocket during a bombing mission in Berlin. Boyd’s body was not recovered, but one of the surviving crew members confirmed that he had been killed in the crash. The War Department issued a report of death on Jan. 12, 1946. He will be buried in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Sep. 17, 2022. Read about Boyd.

Bock, Jr., 18, of St. Louis, was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Bock. He will be buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu on Sep. 27, 2022. Read about Bock.
-- Navy Fireman 2nd Class Edward E. Casinger, 21, of Senath, Missouri, was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Casinger. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, on Nov. 19, 2022. Read about Casinger.
-- Navy Shipfitter 2nd Class Claude R. Garcia, 25, of Ventura, California, was assigned to the battleship USS West Virginia, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941. The USS West Virginia sustained multiple torpedo hits, but timely counter-flooding measures taken by the crew prevented it from capsizing. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 106 crewmen, including Garcia. He will be buried in his hometown on a date yet to be determined. Read about Garcia.

On Aug. 1, 1943, the B-24 Liberator aircraft on which Phillips was serving as gunner crashed as a result of anti-aircraft fire during Operation Tidal Wave. -- Army Cpl. George T. Grimes, 19, was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He went missing in action on July 16, 1950, while fighting the North Korean People’s Army along the Kum River, north of Taejon, South Korea. Following the war, his remains could not be recovered and there is no evidence that he was a prisoner of war. The Army issued a presumptive finding of death on Dec. 31, 1953. -- Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. Walter Nies, 23, was assigned to 96th Bombardment Squadron, 2nd Bombardment Group, 15th Air Force. On Jan. 24, 1944, the B-17F Flying Fortress bomber on which he was serving as a tail gunner was shot down by enemy fighters. The crew was captured by Germans, and Nies was among those sent to Stalag Luft 6 prisoner of war camp. Nies died on May 28, 1944, after being shot. Interment services are pending. Read about Nies.
-- Army Pvt. David S. Whipple, 23, was assigned to the 27th Materiel Squadron, 20th Air Base Group in the Philippines, when Japanese forces invaded the Philippine Islands in December 1941. Intense fighting continued until the surrender of the Bataan peninsula, when thousands of U.S. and Filipino service members were captured. They were subjected to the 65-mile Bataan Death March and held captive at Cabanatuan POW camp. According to prison camp and other historical records, Whipple died on July 26, 1942. -- Army Cpl. David N. Defibaugh, 18, was assigned to C Company, 3rd Engineer Combat Battalion, 24th Infantry Division. He went missing in action on July 20, 1950, while his unit was forced to retreat near the vicinity of Taejon, South Korea. Following the war, his remains could not be recovered and there is no evidence that he was a prisoner of war. The Army issued a presumptive finding of death on Dec. 31, 1953. --Marine Corps Reserve Cpl. William R. Ragsdale, 23, of Nashville, Tennessee, was assigned to Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division on June 28, 1944. His unit was part of the invasion force when American forces participated in the battle for Saipan, which was part of a larger operation to secure the Mariana islands. Ragsdale was initially reported as wounded in action, but his status was later changed to deceased. He will be buried on Aug. 6, 2022, in his hometown. Read about Ragsdale.
-- Army Pvt. Alevin A. Hathaway, 20, of Hinesburg, Vermont, was assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. He was reported missing in action on Nov. 6, 1944, when his unit was engaged in battle with German forces near Hürtgen, Germany. His body was not recovered, and he was declared killed in action Nov. 7, 1945. Following further investigation, Hathaway was declared non-recoverable in December 1950. -- Army Pfc. Melvin J. Little Bear, 21, was assigned to Able Battery, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. On Feb. 13, 1951, he was reported missing in action after his unit was attacked by the Chinese People’s Volunteer Forces near Changbong-ni, South Korea. He had been captured and was a prisoner of war at POW Camp No. 1. Subsequent reports and information from the Chinese and North Korean forces indicated he died in captivity on or about July 21, 1951. -- Army Pfc. John L. Ferguson, 20, was assigned to 28th Material Squadron, U.S. Army Air Forces, when Japanese forces invaded the Philippine Islands in December 1941. Intense fighting continued until the surrender of the Bataan peninsula in 1942. Ferguson was among those captured and held at the Cabanatuan POW Camp, where he reportedly died on Dec. 10, 1942, and was buried. Interment services are pending. Read about Ferguson.
-- Army Pfc. John W. Gordon, 32, was assigned to Company G, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. On Jan. 17, 1945, Gordon was killed while his unit was engaged with German forces during the Battle of Reipertswiller in France. His body could not be recovered due to the ongoing battle. -- Army Air Forces Sgt. Zelwood A. Gravlin, 21, was assigned to 343rd Bombardment Squadron, 98th Bombardment Group, 9th Air Force. On Aug. 1, 1943, the B-24 Liberator aircraft on which Gravlin was the armorer-gunner crashed as a result of anti-aircraft fire during Operation Tidal Wave. -- Army Pfc. Donald Hofman, 19, was assigned to Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. Elements of his unit were supporting five companies attempting to secure terrain near Reipertswiller, France, when they were surrounded by German forces. On Jan. 20, 1945, Hofman was killed as the surrounded companies attempted a break-out through German lines. His body could not be recovered due to the ongoing battle.
