Joseph Diniz
Department Commander - Army

Joseph Diniz was elected Commander of Department of Rhode Island, Veterans of Foreign Wars of United States on June 20, 2025, at the state annual convention.

Joseph served in the United States Army from 1979 to 2009, earning his VFW eligibility by serving in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base and Iraq. Joseph awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal (w/Bronze Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Overseas Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon (7th Award), Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Combat Action Badge.

Joe joined the VFW in 2007 at Anthony C. Almeida, Post 237 in Bristol, Rhode Island. He is a Gold Legacy life member, American Legion Life Member and American Veterans life Member. Joe served in various positions at the post, district, and department levels. He was nominated and accepted the position of Commander for the Department of Rhode Island for 2025 to 2026.

Joe attended Roger Williams University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He also attended and graduated from the United States Army, Sergeant Major’s Academy. He is a graduate of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy. He retired from law enforcement as a K-9 handler.

Joseph is married to Theresa and has two daughters, Ashley, Emily and five grandchildren.
